Weather Resistant Steel Plate
Weather Resistant Steel Plate, also known as CorTen Steel, has properties inhibiting atmospheric corrosion. When placed in suitable environments, surface treatment of steel is not needed as the “rust” extends the life cycle of the structure and creates a protective layer against the elements. The use of weather-resistant steels has predominantly been seen in the structural engineering sector, with the steel being popular in bridge work applications. More recently, we have seen this material used in Intermodal Containers, Sheet Piling and Rail Wagons, to name a few.
Weather Resistant Steel Plate (Weathering Steel Plate) is a type of low-alloy series steel that falls between common steel and stainless steel. Weathering steel plate is made by adding a little Cu, Ni and other anti-corrosion elements to common steel, which makes this kind of steel have better toughness, forming properties, weldability and cutting, anti-fatigue ability, etc. Weathering steel plate’s weathering ability is twice to eight times that of common carbon steel plate, and its coating performance is 1.5 to 10 times that of common carbon steel plate. Meanwhile, weather-resistant steel plates have anti-rust ability, which can expand the service life of steel.

Weather-resistant steel is commonly known as CORTEN (CORrosion resistance – TENsile strength).
Corten A: steel includes more phosphorus and is most commonly used in architectural structures
Corten B: more suitable for applications requiring high strength due to better impact test results at low temperatures
