Popular Stainless Steel Round Tube Grades
Grade selection should consider corrosion environment, welding, fabrication requirements, operating temperature and applicable specifications.
304 Stainless Steel Round Tube
304 is one of the most widely used stainless steels, offering a practical balance of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability and cost.
Typical applications: machinery, architecture, food equipment and general fabrication.
304L Stainless Steel Round Tube
304L has lower carbon content and is commonly selected for welded fabrication where reducing sensitization risk is important.
Typical applications: welded equipment, tanks, frames and process fabrication.
316 Stainless Steel Round Tube
316 contains molybdenum to improve resistance to localized corrosion compared with standard 304 in many aggressive environments.
Typical applications: marine, chemical, outdoor and industrial environments.
316L Stainless Steel Round Tube
316L combines molybdenum-enhanced corrosion resistance with low carbon content and is widely selected for welded and process applications.
Typical applications: sanitary equipment, marine fabrication and chemical processing.
| Requirement | Common Starting Grade | Selection Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| General fabrication | 304 / 304L | Good overall balance of corrosion resistance and fabrication performance. |
| Frequent welding | 304L / 316L | Low-carbon grades are commonly selected for welded assemblies. |
| Coastal / chloride exposure | 316 / 316L | Molybdenum provides improved localized corrosion resistance in many chloride environments. |
| Chemical processing | 316L / higher alloys | Actual chemicals, concentration, temperature and exposure conditions must be evaluated. |
| Elevated temperature | 310S / 321 | Final grade depends on temperature, load and engineering specification. |
| Severe corrosion | 904L / project alloy | Confirm material compatibility against the actual process environment. |
How Is Stainless Steel Round Tube Measured?
Round tubing is normally identified by its outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness (WT).
The approximate inside diameter can be calculated by subtracting twice the wall thickness from the outside diameter.
- OD: Outside Diameter
- ID: Inside Diameter
- WT: Wall Thickness
- Length: Standard or custom cut
For example, a 50 mm OD tube with a 2 mm wall thickness has a nominal calculated inside diameter of approximately 46 mm before applicable tolerances are considered.
Ask About Your Required SizeSeamless vs Welded Stainless Steel Round Tube
Both seamless and welded stainless steel tubing can provide reliable engineering performance. The correct choice depends on standards, pressure, temperature, dimensions, fabrication and service environment.
| Factor | Seamless Round Tube | Welded Round Tube |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Produced without a longitudinal weld seam. | Formed from stainless steel strip or plate and longitudinally welded. |
| Critical service | Frequently specified where seamless construction is required by the applicable engineering standard. | Can be suitable for demanding applications when manufactured and tested to the appropriate specification. |
| Size availability | Availability depends strongly on OD and wall thickness. | Often provides broader dimensional and production flexibility. |
| Decorative / Structural | Can be polished and fabricated when required. | Widely used for architectural, structural and general fabrication tubing. |
| Cost | Often higher for equivalent dimensions. | Frequently more economical for general-purpose applications. |
Common Stainless Steel Tube Standards
Stainless steel tube specifications vary according to application. Always identify the exact product standard on your RFQ rather than relying only on material grade.
| Standard | Typical Scope | Buying Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM A213 | Boiler, superheater and heat exchanger tubing. | Confirm grade, heat treatment and dimensions. |
| ASTM A269 | Seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service. | Commonly encountered for process and instrumentation tubing. |
| ASTM A312 | Seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel pipe. | Typically specified using pipe dimensions and schedule. |
| ASTM A778 | Welded, unannealed austenitic stainless tubular products. | Confirm service and heat-treatment requirements. |
| ASTM A789 | Ferritic/austenitic duplex stainless steel tubing. | Used when duplex stainless grades are specified. |
| EN / DIN / JIS / GOST / GB | International and regional stainless steel tube standards. | State the exact standard and material designation. |
Stainless Steel Round Tube Surface Finishes
Surface condition affects appearance, fabrication and final application. Stainless steel tubing can be supplied with different surface treatments depending on manufacturing method and project requirements.

Stainless Steel Round Tube vs Stainless Steel Pipe
Tube and pipe can look similar, but the terminology and dimensional systems are different.
| Characteristic | Round Tube | Pipe |
|---|---|---|
| Typical sizing | OD × Wall Thickness | NPS × Schedule |
| Dimensional focus | Actual OD, ID and wall thickness | Nominal pipe size and flow / pressure system dimensions |
| Applications | Structural, machinery, sanitary, architectural and fabrication | Process piping and fluid transport systems |
| Ordering example | 50 mm OD × 2 mm wall × 6000 mm | 2 inch NPS × SCH 40 |

What sizes of stainless steel round tube are available?
Steel1Stop's current stainless steel pipe and tube specification covers round outside diameters from 8 mm to 680 mm and wall thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 75 mm. Availability varies by grade and manufacturing method.
What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel round tube?
304 is a widely used general-purpose stainless steel. 316 contains molybdenum, providing improved resistance to localized corrosion in many chloride-containing environments.
What is 304L or 316L?
The L designation identifies a lower-carbon version of the alloy. These grades are commonly selected for welded fabrication.
Is stainless steel round tube measured by OD or ID?
Round tubing is normally specified by outside diameter and wall thickness. The nominal inside diameter can be calculated as OD minus twice the wall thickness.
Is seamless stainless steel tube better than welded tube?
Not automatically. Both can provide reliable engineering performance when manufactured to the appropriate specification. Selection depends on the service environment, standard, pressure, dimensions and project requirements.
