What Is PPGI Coil?
PPGI is galvanized steel that receives surface pretreatment, primer and an organic topcoat in a continuous coil-coating process. The galvanized substrate provides metallic corrosion protection while the paint system adds color, weather resistance and application-specific surface performance.
For purchasing, the word “PPGI” alone is not enough. The final product should be specified by substrate grade, zinc coating, thickness, width, paint chemistry, paint thickness, color, gloss or texture, coil weight and intended application.

PE vs SMP vs HDP vs PVDF PPGI Coatings
Paint type should be selected by exposure, design life, color-retention requirement, forming process and budget—not by color alone.
Polyester
A cost-efficient general-purpose coating with good flexibility and a broad color range. Commonly evaluated for indoor products and standard building applications where premium exterior durability is not required.
Silicone-Modified Polyester
Provides improved weather and color-retention performance compared with standard polyester, making it a common option for more demanding exterior building applications.
High-Durability Polyester
Designed for enhanced durability and fade resistance where buyers need performance above standard PE but do not necessarily require a fluoropolymer coating.
PVDF / Fluoropolymer
A premium exterior coating option used where long-term weathering, chemical resistance and color retention are important purchasing criteria.
RAL Colors, Gloss, Matte and Textured PPGI
PPGI is purchased for both protection and appearance. Color matching should therefore be treated as part of the technical specification, especially for roofing, wall panels, appliances and repeat-production orders.
Steel1Stop's published PPGI range includes RAL or customized colors plus glossy, matte, wrinkled and patterned finishes. For critical appearance requirements, send the RAL number, approved physical sample or visual reference with your inquiry.
Color RFQ checklist
- RAL number or approved color sample
- Gloss level or matte requirement
- Smooth, wrinkle or patterned surface
- Topcoat chemistry and film thickness
- Protective film requirement if applicable
- Batch consistency requirement for repeat orders
PPGI Coil Products
Steel1Stop currently lists standard prepainted galvanized steel coil and wrinkle PPGI coil. Use the products below for detailed product information, or send one RFQ for a custom color, coating, thickness or finish.
PPGI Coil Applications
Application should determine the substrate, zinc coating, paint system and film thickness. The same color does not mean two PPGI coils have the same durability or forming performance.
Roofing & Wall Cladding
PPGI is widely used as feedstock for corrugated roofing sheets, wall panels, trims and cladding. Exterior projects should specify coating and paint performance for the actual environment.
Sandwich Panels & Cold Rooms
Coil is used for insulated sandwich-panel facings where consistent color, surface, width and forming performance are important to continuous panel production.
Home Appliance Panels
Prepainted steel can be used for refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and enclosures when appearance, forming and repeatable color are key requirements.
Warehouses & Factory Buildings
PPGI roofing and wall products are common in warehouses and industrial facilities because they combine a coated metallic substrate with a finished colored surface.
Roll-Formed Profiles & Components
Buyers should specify the forming process and bend severity so the substrate grade and paint system can be checked before production.
Sheds, Barns & Enclosures
Color-coated steel can be used for roofing and enclosure systems where buyers need economical, prefinished material in repeat production.
PPGI Finished-Coil Standards vs Substrate Standards
One common purchasing mistake is to specify only the galvanized substrate standard while omitting the organic coating requirements. PPGI includes both the metallic-coated steel substrate and a paint system, so the order needs to define both where performance is important.
Common references
- ASTM A755/A755M — prepainted, hot-dip metallic-coated steel sheet for exterior building products
- EN 10169 — continuously organic-coated steel flat products
- ASTM A653/A653M — galvanized / galvannealed hot-dip steel substrate
- EN 10346 — continuously hot-dip coated steel flat-product substrate
What Affects PPGI Coil Price?
PPGI coil quotations should be compared on an equivalent technical specification. A low price can simply reflect a lower zinc coating, thinner paint film, cheaper paint chemistry or a different substrate grade.
Base Steel & Grade
Substrate grade and thickness influence both material cost and forming performance.
Zinc Coating
Z40 and Z275 do not have the same metallic coating mass, so quotations must be compared on equal coating specifications.
Paint Chemistry
PE, SMP, HDP and PVDF offer different performance and cost positions.
Paint Thickness
Topcoat, primer and back-coat film build can materially change product durability and price.
Color & Finish
Standard colors, special RAL colors, wrinkle finishes and patterned surfaces can affect production setup and MOQ.
Quantity & Delivery
Coil weight, order quantity, packaging, destination and Incoterm affect the final commercial offer.
How to Request a PPGI Coil Quote
A complete PPGI RFQ should define both the galvanized substrate and the organic coating system.
- Finished-product standard / project standard

PPGI Coil FAQ
What does PPGI mean?
PPGI means prepainted galvanized steel. A galvanized zinc-coated steel substrate is surface-treated, primed and coated with an organic finish such as PE, SMP, HDP or PVDF.
What is the difference between PPGI and galvanized steel coil?
Galvanized coil has a metallic zinc coating but no finished color paint system. PPGI starts with galvanized steel and adds pretreatment, primer and a colored organic coating, providing a finished decorative surface plus additional environmental protection.
What is the difference between PPGI and PPGL?
PPGI uses galvanized zinc-coated steel as the substrate. PPGL uses an aluminum-zinc alloy-coated substrate. They can use similar paint systems but should not be treated as the same product when the project specifies substrate chemistry.
Which PPGI paint is best for roofing?
The correct choice depends on climate, UV exposure, corrosion environment, design life and budget. PE is commonly used for standard requirements; SMP and HDP provide enhanced durability; PVDF is a premium option where long-term exterior weathering and color retention are key requirements.
